Freshman Scholarships 

In addition to providing numerous scholarships to current LSU Engineering students each year, the College of Engineering has several competitive scholarships available to qualified first-year engineering students.

General College of Engineering Scholarships

All prospective LSU Engineering students will be considered for these awards if they follow the guidelines and meet the criteria provided below:

Students will only be notified about College of Engineering Scholarships if they have been selected to receive one. These scholarship offers will be made in February through April of each year and will be communicated via mail and/or email using the contact information listed on the application for admission to LSU.

PRISE Program

The PRISE (Preparing Resilient Individuals for Success in Engineering) Program is an NSF-funded scholarship that is designed to help high-achieving, high potential engineering students with financial hardships persist through graduation. This program provides a need-based scholarship to entering freshmen engineering students for up to eight semesters and offers academic and professional development programs to help our students succeed in engineering.

Program Highlights:

  • Need-based scholarship with awards ranging from $2,000-$10,000, depending on "unmet need."
  • Faculty mentorship—students will be matched with faculty from the department that offers their declared major.
  • Early access to engineering staff and advisors.
  • Academic success workshops and coaching.
  • Professional development workshops and coaching.
  • Access to funds to help secure internships (between junior and senior year).

LSU Pre-Engineering Pathway Gold STEM Seal Scholarship

The LSU Pre-Engineering Pathway Gold STEM Seal Scholarship is a $1,500 scholarship awarded to one outstanding LSU Pre-Engineering Gold Seal endorsed student entering the College of Engineering each fall. The scholarship is awarded $750 for the fall semester and $750 for the spring semester of the incoming freshman year. For the scholarship to be renewed during the spring semester, the student must maintain a minimum college GPA of 3.0 in the first semester.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an incoming freshman who received a Gold STEM Seal by completing the Pre-Engineering LSU STEM Pathway high school program
  • Have earned an overall high school GPA of 3.5
  • Have earned an LSU STEM Pathways course GPA of 3.5
  • Declared an engineering, computer science, or construction management major or intend to pursue a degree in a STEM field at LSU

To apply for the LSU Pre-Engineering Pathway Gold STEM Seal Scholarship, you must complete the LSU Pre-Engineering Pathway Gold STEM Seal Scholarship application, which includes having:

  • A digital copy of your high school transcripts
  • Letter of recommendation from this year's pre-engineering teacher. If you do not have pre-engineering this year, obtain a letter of recommendation from a science or math teacher. This letter should be sent directly to Kim Kaufman: kkaufman@lsu.edu
  • Essay: Describe your LSU Pre-Engineering experience, your engineering interests and why you think you should be awarded the scholarship. (2 pages maximum, 11 pt Times New Roman, double spaced)

Applications must be received by April 4, 2024.

LSU College of Engineering FIRST Robotics Scholarship

The LSU FIRST Robotics Scholarship is a $1,000/year scholarship awarded to one outstanding FIRST alumnus/alumnae entering the LSU College of Engineering each fall. Recipients can receive the award for up to four years if they remain in good academic (2.5 GPA) and disciplinary standing and demonstrate progress towards a degree from the College of Engineering each semester. The award will be disbursed in $500 installments each semester for up to eight semesters (for a total of up to $4,000).

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an entering first-year student at LSU pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College of Engineering.
  • Have completed your application for admission to LSU and/or be admitted to LSU by March 15, 2024.
  • Have a 3.0 high school GPA (as recalculated by the LSU Admissions Office).
  • Have been involved in FIRST Robotics for at least one year during high school.
  • Have participated in a FIRST local, regional, state, and/or national competition on a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team or a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team.

LSU College of Engineering VEX Scholarship

The LSU Pre-Engineering VEX is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to one outstanding LSU Pre-Engineering student entering the College of Engineering each fall. The scholarship is awarded $500 for the fall semester and $500 for the spring semester of the incoming freshman year. For the scholarship to be renewed during the spring semester, the student must maintain a minimum college GPA of 3.0 in the first semester. 

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an incoming freshman who participated in the Pre-Engineering LSU STEM Pathway high school program
  • Have earned an overall high school GPA of 3.0
  • Declared an engineering, computer science, or construction management major
  • Have been involved in VEX Robotics for at least one year during high school
  • Have participated in VEX local, regional, state, and/or national competition

To apply for the VEX scholarship, you must:

  • Complete the LSU College of Engineering VEX Scholarship Application
  • Include/upload a 500-word essay on your interest and involvement in VEX, how it has impacted you, and how you think it will impact you as you pursue your engineering degree(s) at LSU (Times New Roman, 12-pt, double-spaced)
  • Have an adult mentor/coach involved with your VEX team email a letter of recommendation directly to Kim Kaufman: kkaufman@lsu.edu
