Accreditation

The LSU College of Engineering offers engineering programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or ABET. Accreditation is a review process that determines if an educational program meets a defined standard of quality. Accreditation requires periodical renewal, and as such, the LSU College of Engineering programs are periodically reviewed for renewal and to ensure the quality of its programs is maintained.

ABET accreditation is a form of quality assurance for engineering programs, and our programs’ accreditation means they are recognized globally as meeting the standards set by their technical professions.

ABET accreditation provides students with:

Assurance that their chosen program has met standards essential to prepare graduates to enter critical STEM fields in the global workforce.
Verification that the educational experience meets the global standard for technical education in their profession.
Enhanced employment opportunities—multinational corporations require graduation from an accredited program.
Entry to a technical profession through licensure, registration, and certification—all of which often require graduation from an ABET-accredited program as a minimum qualification.
Eligibility for many federal student loans, grants, and/or scholarships.
Global recognition, as ABET accreditation is recognized worldwide through international agreements, and many other countries’ national accrediting systems are based on the ABET model.

ABET requires that each program in the college make available to the public certain information, namely their program educational objectives, their student outcomes, their accreditation status, and data on their student enrollments and degrees granted. The LSU College of Engineering also offers construction management programs accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). The primary goal of ACCE is to promote and improve construction education in colleges and universities. By working together through ACCE, people representative of the total construction community and the public at-large, construction educators and constructors, establish and maintain standards and criteria for accreditation, provide guidance to those programs seeking to achieve accredited status, and carry out the accreditation process.

ACCE accreditation serves the interests of:

Students: by helping them identify institutions and programs that offer quality education in construction education.
The Construction Industry: by enabling employers to identify persons who have the potential for making lasting contributions to the construction industry and their profession.
Owners/Users of Constructed Facilities and the Public at-Large: by raising the professional caliber of constructors and thus, the quality of the construction for which they assume responsibility.

Specifically, accreditation of a construction education program by ACCE assures

students and prospective employers that the program has met stringent industry standards of content and quality.
that program graduates have been provided a quality education enabling them to perform a broad range of professional responsibilities.
the construction industry and students that the program performs periodic self-evaluations to keep current with emerging technologies and requirements of the construction industry.

Our construction management undergraduate degree program was established in 1972 and has been accredited by ACCE since 1982. The ACCE has accredited the construction management MS graduate program since 2016. ACCE requires each accredited program to provide information to the general public.
