David Phan Named LSU CAS Outstanding Tutor
Baton Rouge, La January 8 2018 - LSU Junior, David Phan, is the 2017-2018 recipient of the D.D. and Fran Smith Outstanding
Tutor Award for his level of service in the LSU CAS Shell Tutorial Center. As a chemical engineering major, Phan tutors students in various levels of math,
physics, chemistry and engineering courses. This semester Phan said, “I enjoy tutoring because I am able to offer my knowledge to show my
tutees how to conceptualize complex problems, which allows them to have a strong
foundation to tackle harder problems.” The process for selecting the Outstanding Tutor Award requires the tutor to pass
level one of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification
process. Additionally, student and supervisor feedback determine the tutor deserving
of the award. Phan met all the requirements named above, and went
further to become CRLA certified as an Advanced Level II Tutor. “David not only demonstrated tremendous content knowledge and leadership to the students, but to his fellow tutors as well. We challenge our veteran staff to step up and be role models for new tutors. He was the clear choice this year.” Matthew Mattox, Assistant Director of Academic Support. Free tutoring in the Shell Tutorial Center is one of several CAS programs available
to students to assist with persistence and timely graduation in their major of choice.
