Mammalogy
The mammal collection, with current holdings of more than 48,000 specimens, is the largest of its kind in the Central Gulf region and among the 20 largest in the nation. It contains 26 holotypes (specimens representing species new to science).
The collection includes representatives of nearly all mammal species from the Southeastern United States. Neotropical species are also well represented, with large collections of bats and rodents primarily from Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica. We recently adopted an orphaned collection from Tulane, which greatly strengthened our holdings of mammals from the Southeastern and Southwestern U.S., but also contains extensive material from Southeast Asia. Our most recent acquisitions are dominated by specimens from tropical Africa and Southeast Asia.
