Remote Proctoring

General Remote Proctoring Information for Faculty

If you anticipate that remote proctoring of assessments will/may be needed, please note: 

  • Students will have to pay for remote proctoring. Please be mindful of the additional financial burden this may place on students.
  • ProctorU is the remote proctoring service that is supported by LSU Online and the Office of Testing and Evaluation Services.
  • If remote proctoring is used students must be informed of costs in advance at the point of registration (LSU has applied a notification to students on the fee bill) and in the course syllabus.
  • Students may have technical limitations that prevent them from utilizing remote proctoring as a testing option.
  • Faculty are encouraged to consider alternative assessments.   

If you plan to use a remote proctoring service, below are syllabus statement that can be adapted for your course. 

Generic Syllabus Statement:

A remote proctoring service provider will/may be used for proctoring of exams in this course. There is a cost for this service that the student is responsible for paying.

 ProctorU Syllabus Statement:

ProctorU is/may be utilized for testing in this course.  This service enables remote proctors employed by ProctorU to view your personal computer’s screen, webcam, and audio for academic integrity.  Additionally, there is a cost for this service, LSU does not receive any portion of this cost. Please visit the Office of Testing and Evaluation Services website for more information.

Please consider the following alternative assessment options in order to reduce the number of assessments administered in ProctorU. More information about alternative assessments can be found within the Faculty Guide for Remote Teaching page under the Modify Assessments and Activities Section by clicking Alternative Assessment Considerations.

To provide an exam remotely the following steps are needed:

1. Create a digital copy of the test/exam using test creation platform.

2. Schedule the test/exam instance with a remote proctoring vendor such as ProctorU.

3. Input the link to the digital copy of the test/exam into the remote proctoring vendor.

4. Inform student to schedule for the remotely proctored test/exam.

Scheduling Final Exams in ProctorU:

Please consider the following when scheduling dates/times for remotely proctored finals:

  • ProctorU encourages faculty to schedule remotely proctored exams at least two weeks prior to the start of the exam window
  • Select a wide range of dates and times to minimize capacity issues and overlap of exams by different courses
  • Be aware of students who are taking exams in different time zones

In the case of a suspected academic integrity concern, ProctorU will flag the incident and issue an incident report, which is sent to the person listed as the contact in the exam information. You can then investigate the report by reviewing exam session data.

If you receive an incident report, and after review, believe there is a possible academic integrity concern, you will need to report the incident to Student Advocacy & Accountability for a possible violation of the LSU Code of Student Conduct. For information on this process, review the page Understanding Academic Integrity at LSU Student Advocacy & Accountability. Use the Academic Misconduct Reporting Form to report any possible violations of the LSU Code of Student Conduct.

How may I address student-expressed privacy concerns?

How do we assist students without technology to take the exam through ProctorU?

I have a student that needs extended time how does this work with ProctorU?

May I create an exam in ProctorU?

No. ProctorU is not an exam creation solution, but a remote proctoring solution. The exam must be created in another solution:

  1. Moodle Quiz - supported by the LSU Faculty Technology Center
  2. Questionmark - supported by LSU OTES


May I use the LSU Testing Center (Himes 52) to administer my exams?

The LSU Testing Center (Himes 52) is not open during the Fall 2020 Semester. However, OTES is developing a process for faculty to administer paper and pencil exams for LSU courses.

 


How should I report potential academic misconduct for remotely proctored exams?

Faculty are responsible for reviewing incident reports within ProctorU. Please see Academic Misconduct on the ProctorU GROK article for reporting information.

 


In order to utilize ProctorU I must include a statement about ProctorU costs on my syllabus, how may I do this?

Please include a reference to ProctorU costs in the course description, at registration, and the following statement in the syllabus:

What are the technology requirements for taking an exam through ProctorU?

Please visit the ProctorU Equipment page for specific requirements.

If you are unable to meet the technology requirements, please contact your instructor for assistance.

 


What if I experience Internet stability issues while taking an exam through ProctorU?

Please work with ProctorU first to try and resolve the issue through the chatbox or call ProctorU at 1-888-772-8678. If the issue is not able to be resolved, please contact your instructor and inform them of the situation.

How early should I sign into ProctorU for my remotely proctored exam?

It is important to first ensure your technology is prepared for ProctorU prior to exam day. Please visit ProctorU's Getting Started page.

The day of exam, close all open programs/apps on your computer, then with nothing else open in your web browser, log into your ProctorU account at least 2-3 minutes before the scheduled time of the exam. To launch your exam, click the Start Session button.

Since ProctorU requires use of a secluded area to take exams, are there places on campus where can I take a remotely proctored exam?

Residential Halls

Students living on campus may request space for taking exams using the LSU Residential Life space reservation system.

LSU Library

LSU students may request individual study space using the LSU Libraries' space reservation system.

Olinde Career Center

LSU students may reserve a private room in the Olinde Career Center Recruitment Center using the LSU Olinde Career Center room reservation form.


I am registered with LSU Disability Services, will I still be able to receive my testing accommodations?

Students registered with LSU Disability Services may still receive accommodations when using ProctorU.

What if someone comes in while I am taking my exam? What if my pet enters the room?

If someone comes in, you will still be able to complete your exam, but your exam session will be flagged for review. Your instructor and/or LSU Student Advocacy & Accountability may enter the incident through the academic accountability process.

It is okay for you to have a pet in the room, as long as it does not impair your ability to take your exam. 

 


Where can I check for my exam results?

ProctorU does not store or have the ability to view a student's exam results after the exam is complete. Please contact your instructor.

 


I am concerned regarding the cost of remote proctoring: Do I have any recourse?

I have privacy concerns with using ProctorU, how are privacy concerns addressed?
