GEOL 1001 Prerequisite Online: May 19 – June 6, 2025
Take the GEOL 1001 prerequisite online during the two weeks prior to camp.

Field Camp Experience: June 9 - July 2, 2025
Take GEOL 1003 (and 1601 and 1602) as a field-based course at LSU’s spectacular field station outside Colorado Springs, CO. It is a 3-week field class, and the only extra cost is travel to and from Colorado plus tuition. Room, board, and food paid for by our incredible alumni and donors!

About the Camp

LSU maintains a rustic camp facility in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains south of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The site has been used for field geology courses since 1928. LSU purchased the camp property in 1954 from the Keeton brothers whose father homesteaded the area in the late 1800s. Remnants of the old homestead still stand in various places on the property.

About Charles Barney

The LSU Geology Field Camp opened in 1928 and serves a vital role within the College of Science. The field camp gives Geology and Geophysics students the opportunity to take their learning experience beyond the classroom; to explore the complex natural structures and mechanisms which form the blueprint for planet Earth. Our field camp is a priceless to have as a teaching environment.

Thanks to Charles Barney’s generosity, the field camp now has a perpetual source of funding. This return will be used each year by the Charles Barney Geology Field Camp Program to pay for operating expenses, facility improvement, and staff salaries for faculty who work at the camp. Barney was a former LSU football player who played on some of LSU’s most successful teams in the 1940s. Additionally, he was an United States Navy veteran of World War II’s Pacific Theatre. Following the war, Barney made a mark in the petroleum industry, serving as a key figure in the Mobil and Superior Oil corporations for several decades. Barney then ran his own business based in Houston, Mark I Enterprises, which invests in oil and gas as well as real estate. Mr. Barney passed away December 3, 2017.

Introductory Field Camp
