Federal Trio Programs
Federal TRIO Programs (U. S. Department of Education) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline to post baccalaureate.

SSS was one of the original “trio” of components established under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was originally funded in 1968 in the Higher Education Act. Over the course of the last 40 years, the number of programs have increased, but the name TRIO has survived as the identifier of programs for underrepresented students.
