What is ROTC?

Leadership That Lasts a Lifetime

Army ROTC is an elective curriculum you take along with your required college classes. It gives you the tools, training and experiences that will help you succeed in any competitive environment. At LSU, it is THE ONLY set of classes focused on leadership, ethical and moral decision making. Along with great leadership training, Army ROTC can pay for your college tuition. Because Army ROTC is an elective, you can participate your freshman and sophomore years without any obligation to join the Army. As a member of Army ROTC, you will also be a member of LSU’s oldest student organization; the Corps of Cadets which was founded at the time of the University’s founding in 1860. If you choose to commit to ROTC, you will have a normal college student experience like everyone else on campus, but when you graduate, you will be commissioned as an Officer in the Army. At that point, you will have a wide range of interest areas you can specialize in called branches.

Why Become an Officer?

Those who succeed in the Army ROTC program are students who excel and want something more out of the college experience. Generally, these students are scholars who keep their grades up, athletes who are physically strong and leaders who have a great desire to learn.

Your Commitment

Army ROTC students who receive an Army ROTC scholarship or enter the Army ROTC Advanced Course must agree to complete a period of service with the Army.

You can serve full time in the Army for three years (four years for scholarship winners)Selected Cadets may choose to serve part time in the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard while pursuing a civilian career

It's an experience that you can't get anywhere else, and your leadership skills will be challenged every day. Contact your campus Military Science department for more specific details on your Army ROTC service commitment.

Enrolling in the Army ROTC Basic Course does NOT involve a commitment of service to the Army unless you have received an Army ROTC Scholarship.

A Message to Parents

For a young adult, joining the Army can be a tough decision. Without the support of family and friends, the decision can be even tougher. This section is designed to help you understand the benefits of your son or daughter's potential military service, and what you can expect for the future.

A Clear Future

The U.S Army and Army Reserve offer training and hands-on experience in hundreds of career paths. From engineering to law, medicine to mathematics, there are few institutions in the world that can match the training and educational services of the Army.

Aside from on-the-job training, the Army has dozens of programs designed to help Soldiers earn a college degree without having to swim through a sea of debt afterwards.  The ROTC program for example, allows a young adult to attend college, receive Army training, and a commission as a U.S. Army Officer upon graduation.
