Sigma Nu has a proud and rich history. Founded by three cadets—James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley— at the Virginia Military Institute in a period of civil strife known as the Reconstruction, the organization formed soon became Sigma Nu Fraternity. Sigma Nu transforms society through the commitment to the Fraternity’s founding principles: leadership and ethical living. Its mission is to develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth; to foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart, and character; and to perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity.
