Biographical Sketch
Dr. Shengmin Guo earned his PhD from the University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science in 1998. After being awarded his doctorate, Dr. Guo was appointed to a Departmental Lecturership within the Dept. of Engineering Science. Subsequently, in 2002, he was appointed to a University Lectureship at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (now the University of Manchester, UK). In 2004, Dr. Guo joined Louisiana State University. Dr Guo’s main area of research in his early career is gas turbines and in particular aerodynamics and heat transfer including film cooling. Since he joined LSU, he has broadened his research to jet engine thermal barrier coatings, solid oxide fuel cells, high temperature alloys, and most recently, metal based additive manufacturing. He successfully established and maintained a high impact research and educational program at LSU. He has published over 140 peer reviewed articles in high impact journals and published technical papers at over 130 national and international conferences. Since he joined LSU in 2004, he supervised 28 PhD students, 8 MSc students, and 60 undergraduate Senior Design Projects or Independent Studies by 2024. He is the recipient of LSU Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award, LSU Rainmaker (STEM Senior Scholar), LSU Distinguished Faculty Award, and LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award. Dr. Guo developed metal based additive manufacturing capability at LSU and leads LSU Center for Transformative Innovation in Energy Research. Dr. Guo is also a registered professional engineer (Louisiana).
