Mastering the art of virtual interviews: tips from a career center insider
Often, the first interview with a company will be conducted over the phone or virtually in a video call. Our Associate Director of Finance and Operations, Jessica, has conducted her fair share of virtual interviews over the years and has some insider knowledge to pass on to you!
Hey there, job seekers!
If you've ever found yourself staring at your computer screen, palms sweaty, heart racing, awaiting that virtual interview to start, you're not alone. Virtual interviews have become the norm, and acing them requires a mix of preparation, professionalism, and a sprinkle of charisma. Luckily, with some insider tips, you can breeze through your next virtual interview like a pro.
As someone who's been behind the scenes facilitating virtual interviews for the past six years at the Olinde Career Center, I've seen it all – from the great to the cringe-worthy. But fear not, I'm here to share some secrets to help you shine in your virtual spotlight.
1. Prep Like a Pro
First things first, preparation is key! Save a copy of the job description – it's your virtual interview guidebook. Knowing who you're interviewing with and understanding the role inside and out sets the stage for success. Clarify with the recruiter on the specifics of the interview: who, when (check your time zones!), and a backup contact method if needed.
2. Research, Research, Research
Ever showed up to an interview only to realize you're in the wrong place mentally? Don't let that be you. Research the company, know their departments, and understand the role you're applying for. Trust me; it's the little details that count.
3. Show Up, Show Out
Location, location, location – it's not just for real estate. Choose a quiet, distraction-free spot for your interview, with reliable internet. Check your background – a clutter-free zone or a professional virtual background does wonders. And hey, let's keep those usernames professional too!
4. Tech Matters
While using a phone for your virtual interview works in a pinch, opt for a computer setup if possible. A horizontal layout looks more professional and minimizes distractions.
5. Ace the Q&A
The final stretch of your interview is your time to shine. Have thoughtful questions prepared – ones that show your genuine interest in the role and company. Remember, good questions leave a lasting impression.
6. Don't Forget Your Manners
Last but certainly not least, don't forget to say thank you. A quick follow-up email expressing gratitude for the opportunity goes a long way in leaving a positive and lasting impression.
So there you have it – the insider's guide to mastering virtual interviews. With these
tips in your back pocket, you're ready to tackle any virtual interview that comes
your way. Good luck out there, job seekers!
